Howard G. Turnbull Obituary

EDMESTON - Howard George Turnbull, 100, a resident of Edmeston since 1947, died Oct. 12, 2023, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

He was born on May 24, 1923, to George Turnbull and Vivian Rockwell Turnbull, on the family farm south of Garrattsville. He was the eldest of five children.

Howard spent his youth in the Butternut Valley, graduated from Morris Central School and attended SUNY Delhi.

On Feb. 26, 1944, Howard and Priscilla Blanchard were married in the Baptist Parsonage in Edmeston. They were married for 68 years until her death in 2012.

As a young man Howard worked a variety of jobs including hauling milk, driving buses, working for the NY Central Railroad and farming. Eventually he became the proprietor of the Blanchard & Turnbull Garage in Edmeston and later worked for the Town of Edmeston Highway Department until his retirement. After retirement he worked part-time for the town for several more years doing maintenance at the town hall, a job he greatly enjoyed even when it involved shoveling snow.

All his life Howard spent as much time in the outdoors as possible. He hunted, fished and gardened. In later years he watched the outdoors world beside the comfort of his wood stove when he couldn't be out in it. Another major pleasure was playing his fiddle and for many years he performed at local events as a member of the Silver Strings Band.

Survivors include his children, Mary Hauer (Edward), Patricia Osborne (John), William Turnbull (Barbara), and Kathy Williams (William); seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Bruce C. Turnbull; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, Priscilla; brothers, James S. Turnbull, John R. Turnbull; and sister, Isabel Turnbull Winters.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20, at Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home, 60 Broad St., Morris.

A private funeral will be held and burial will be in Edmeston Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donating to the the Edmeston Emergency Squad (Edmeston, NY 13335) or Edmeston Free Library Building Fund (Edmeston, NY 13335).

His family has entrusted his care to the Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home in Morris.
