Delhi, NY - DELHI - Hugh Sutherland, 94, of Delhi, passed away June 24, 2025. Hugh was born Feb. 12, 1931 to his parents, Edith and Herbert Sutherland of Delhi. Hugh married Irene Marshfield in 1952.

Hugh is survived by four children, John (Ramona) Sutherland of Scotia, Sharon (Michael) Johnson of Hollister, Florida, David Sutherland of Jacksonville, Florida and Diane (Michael) Ringler of Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hugh was "Papa" to grandchildren, Nicholas, Christopher, Carmen, Connor, Ryan and Kayla, and great-grandchildren, Christopher Jr., Aliyah, Cayden, Will and Olivia. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, wife and brother, J. Lyle Sutherland.

Hugh graduated from Delaware Academy in 1948. He earned a degree in animal husbandry from Delhi Tech in 1950. Hugh was called up to the Army and served in Germany for two years after he and Irene moved to Delhi in 1955 to work on the Sutherland family farm. When he returned from the military, Chapel Bank Farm was established. Hugh developed a renowned Holstein herd with a top breeding and merchandising program. He was proud to have bred some of the breed's top bulls and had nine Grand Champions at the Delaware County Holstein show, over the years. After selling the herd in 1982, Hugh served as executive secretary of the New York Holstein Association for 15 years. He supported dairy farmers across the state and was an ambassador for the dairy industry and the Holstein breed. In his retirement, Hugh enjoyed maintaining an immaculate homestead with Irene and enjoyed chatting about sports and politics with his family.

A memorial service will take place at noon Saturday, July 26 at the West Delhi church with a luncheon following. The "Sutherland Scholarship Fund" will be established to support future New York farmers in Hugh's and Irene's memory. Interested donors can contact John or Diane.
