James E. Snyder Obituary
Cherry Valley, NY - CHERRY VALLEY - James Earl Snyder, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 10, 2026, in Cobleskill.
He was born on Aug. 24, 1938, in Cooperstown, and was raised in Cherry Valley, a place he always considered home.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carolyn Snyder. He is survived by his son, James Albert Snyder and his wife, Varje; daughter, Elizabeth Sarah Harding and her husband, Stephen; and by his cherished grandchildren, Emma Aliide Snyder, Ella Carolyn Snyder, Elijah James Harding, and Lucy Grace Harding.
James was a hardworking, loyal, and dependable man who took pride in doing things the right way. He was raised on the family dairy farm in Cherry Valley, where he developed the strong work ethic that stayed with him throughout his life.
He proudly served in the United States Navy from Sept. 26, 1956, to September 6, 1960, as a machinist's mate aboard the USS Des Moines, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for his service. He entered the service with his lifelong friend Cliff Wright, and after retirement, he continued the tradition of visiting Cliff each year on the anniversary of their enlistment.
After his military service, James worked on a road crew before finding his calling as an electrician. He worked for US Gypsum and later for General Motors, a career he truly enjoyed. After marrying, he lived in Washingtonville, before following General Motors to Defiance, Ohio. In his retirement, he returned to Cherry Valley, the place he always called home.
James found great satisfaction in keeping his home and property looking their best. He loved woodworking and spent many hours in his shop making birdhouses, wooden whirligigs, and other projects. He also enjoyed gardening, reading about Civil War history, visiting historical sites, helping on his friend Everett's farm, and watching basketball and baseball. He was a member of the American Legion and the Silver and Gold Senior Club.
More than anything, James loved his family. He was especially devoted to his grandchildren, who brought him great joy. He looked forward to their visits, counted the days until he could see them, and in his eyes they were all perfect.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, April 20, at Ottman Funeral Home, 22 Church Street, Cherry Valley, with a memorial service to promptly follow at 1 p.m. A luncheon will be held afterward at his home in Cherry Valley.
James will be remembered for his quiet strength, his steady presence, and the love he gave to his family, his friends, and his community.
