Harpersfield, NY - HARPERSFIELD - James Michael Varco, 72, passed away peacefully at his home on Oct. 28, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on Nov. 12, 1952, in White Plains, Jim was the beloved son of Louis Peter and Carolyn Lucille (Gentile) Varco. Jim grew up in Silver Lake and graduated from White Plains High School, where he then joined the IBEW, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Jim began his career in public service in 1977 as a Corrections Officer at Westchester County Jail. In 1980, he joined the North Castle Police Department in Armonk, where he served with distinction. In 1990, he was promoted to Detective Sergeant, a role he held with pride until his retirement. During his time with the department, Jim was incredibly proud to work alongside his K-9 partners, Buster and Rex, forming a bond of trust and loyalty that exemplified his dedication to the force. After Jim retired from K-9 training, he shared many wonderful memories with his best furry friend, Lynx.
On Aug. 25, 1990, Jim married the love of his life, Helen Nordone (Schleicher), in White Plains. The two were inseparable, sharing every moment of their 35 years together with unwavering love, devotion, and companionship.
Jim found great joy in the outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or riding his tractor while tending to his land. He also enjoyed relaxing with a good cigar and watching his favorite westerns or police dramas. Known for his quick wit and playful spirit, Jim was notorious for being a jokester, always ready with a laugh and a light-hearted remark that brightened the room.
He took great pride in passing along his knowledge to his grandchildren, each of whom shared an incredibly special bond with him. Whether teaching them life lessons or simply spending time together, Jim cherished every moment with them.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Helen Varco; children, James M. Varco Jr., Kimberly Ferraro (Edward), Paul J. Nordone Jr. (Sharon), Noel Celentano (Derrick), and Wendy Beehner (Charles); and cherished grandchildren, Abbie, Emmie, Jaya, Leah, Aniello "AJ," and Anthony. He is also survived by his sister, Susan Marinelli (Arthur), along with many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews; and Jeff Carpenter, who had a special bond with Jim.
Jim was predeceased by his parents; and aunts, Theresa Triano and Dorothy Lombardo.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held in the spring.
