James William Poole
ROXBURY - James "Bill" William Poole of Roxbury, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, joined his Savior on Jan. 18, 2020, at the age of 93.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
Bill was born on March 27, 1926, to Ernest and Reta (Young) Poole and was raised in Afton with his sisters, Pauline and Mary and brother, Edward.
He graduated from Afton Central School in 1943.
Like so many brave and patriotic, young men of his generation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944. He served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne until he was discharged in November, 1946.
After his World War II service, Bill married the love of his life, Lorraine Shepard, on April 29, 1948. They were blessed with two children, Mark and Cynthia.
Bill enjoyed a career of more than 40 years in building material sales management.
He made fast and lifelong friends through his work, community and church.
He was an avid outdoorsman and observer of nature's beauty. He enjoyed bird watching, hunting and especially fly-tying and fishing. Among his greatest joys was the time spent with his large, extended family, all of whom will remember him with love and admiration for his kindness, warmth, good cheer and for being a steadfast example of what it means to live a life of faith, charity and integrity.
Bill was always mindful of and grateful for the abundant love in his family.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine Poole; sisters, Pauline Comings and Mary Douglas and husband, David; sister-in-law, Judy Poole; son, Mark Poole; son-in-law, Douglas Whittaker; grandsons, Michael Poole and Nathan Ives and wife, Susan; granddaughters, Jana Murphy and husband, John, Laura Gregory and husband, James and Lisa Martin and husband, Mike; and grandson, Mark Whittaker and wife, Lori. I have lost one of my best friends. We owned property together and called each other "partner's. We never once argued and we had a lifetime of laughs and friendship. You will be missed and hope to get together someday on the other side.

Bill and Lorraine were such an important part of my years of growing up in Roxbury along with their children, Cindy and Mark. Bill and I sang in choir for many years together. as well. He loved the outdoors and thrived as a fly fisherman. He enjoyed his time in nature and loved watching all of it up close and personal. They lived in an incredibly beautiful mountain home that was a favorite vista for my entire family. Bill is now enjoying his forever home with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God bless those who mourn his loss.
