Janet Gros Gray Obituary

SPRINGFIELD CENETER - Janet G. Gray passed away peacefully among loving friends and family on Saturday morning, Feb. 8, 2025, after a brief illness.

Janet was born Sept. 19, 1924 in Brooklyn, to Laurence J. and Alice P. Gros. She lived in and around Springfield and Cooperstown during her school years, graduated from Springfield Central School in 1941, and attended Albany State Teacher's College.

Janet married Leslie B. Gray in April 1944 and together they ran the Gray's family farm in East Springfield and started a family. They left the farm in 1956 when Les began his career as a real estate appraiser and moved to the Syracuse area where Les became a founding member of Pomeroy Appraisal Associates in 1964.

Janet's life work was her home and family; she and Les raised five children born between 1945 and 1957. She was a guiding light to three generations, doing the hard work, loving and caring for her family, telling us the hard truths, making us better humans and citizens. Bravo Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma.

After retirement in 1988, Janet and Les returned to Springfield to reunite with old friends and make new ones. Both were active in their community, especially St. Mary's Episcopal Church. They traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, visiting family and friends, National Parks and Monuments, and many other attractions. Janet took up golf late in life and loved playing with family and friends at Tanner Valley and Otsego Golf clubs.

Janet was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, her parents, her big brother William Gros, sisters-in-law Pat and Kris Gros, and her younger sister Dora Gros. She is survived by her loving children; Bill (Wanda), Peter (Cheryl), Les, Judy (Jon) Wetsig, and Laurie (Dan) Parkinson; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home was Janet's home for the past three years. She and her family are eternally grateful for the love, care, laughs, and activities shared by their incredible staff and residents.

Janet's love, generosity, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear will be deeply missed by all who knew her. "Mothers hold their children's hands for a short time, but their hearts forever."

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held in early July.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home, 48 Grove St, Cooperstown, NY 13326, or Susquehanna SPCA, PO Box 267, Cooperstown, NY 13326: or a charity of one's choice.
