Jean E. Johnson
COOPERSTOWN - Jean E. Johnson, 81, our precious gift from the Lord, has returned home to be with Him. She passed away at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, Friday, Nov. 8, 2019, following a lengthy battle with cancer. It was time for the Lord's angels to take her home so she could be in peace. As a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she will be deeply missed.
Jean was born on May 31, 1938, in Oneonta, the daughter of Oliver and Nellie Mae (Campbell) McAdams. She attended school there until the seventh grade.
A few years later she met and fell in love with a "handsome man," Lynn Johnson Sr. They were married on July 1, 1954, in Westville and they shared 64 wonderful and happy years of marriage together. Over their married life they lived in Oneonta and Cooperstown. In 1969 they bought their "forever home" in Fly Creek where they raised their children.
Jean was a very dedicated, devoted and loving person. She spent her time wisely and enjoyed doing what she loved the most, tending to her family, which she always placed before her own needs or work.
In her early years she worked at the Otesaga Hotel and a dress factory in Oneonta. Later, and for more than 30 years until they closed, she worked at Cooperstown Dry Cleaners. She then began working at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown in the housekeeping department. Her assigned work area was in the emergency room, where for more than 24 years, she displayed great pride in her work. She was always making sure everything was in perfect shape before she completed her day. During her "off hours" she did private duty home health care for many local families, caring for their loved ones. She was a hard worker and would often work seven days a week while also tending to her loving children and making sure all their needs were met.
Jean was a strong willed, yet loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and wife. In everything she did, her love and happiness showed through, whether in her work, caring for her children, her husband or while gardening and cooking. She grew the most beautiful roses, her favorite colors were the deep reds. When cooking she loved making her favorites, mac and cheese, apple pie and eggs and bacon, among other things. She enjoyed playing cards and Carrom Board with family and was a tough competitor. She derived great joy from Christmas shopping and spending her hard-earned money on her family. She would always stop at McDonald's afterwards to have a smoothie or milkshake and celebrate a job well done!
Jean had a very special place in her heart for her dogs. They were like her kids. She loved going shopping for them and getting them groomed on a regular basis so they would look and smell good. Her dogs, like her family, brought her great joy and companionship.
Her many friends, co-workers, and everyone who knew her, will remember her wonderful sense of humor and the laughter which accompanied her as well as the many ways she touched each of their lives ... as you each did hers. Jean will be deeply missed.
Jean is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Lynn Johnson Sr., who will miss her very much, six children and in-laws, each of who will also miss her, Lynn Jr. (Connie), Bonnie Rydzy, Betty Dean, Mary Ann Curry (Greg), Paul (Lisa), and Beverly Grescheck (Ron). She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, Michael, Crystal, Chad, Tanya, Stacey, Jeremy, Patty, Kayla, Paul, Amy, David and Kimberly and by 27 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers, James McAdams and Oliver McAdams.
She was predeceased by a brother, Chet, two sisters, and by six grandchildren.
Funeral services for Jean will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Jean's memory be made to Strong Memorial Hospital, 601 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, NY 14642, to benefit its cancer center.
Sympathy cards for the family may be sent to Lynn Johnson Sr., 737 County Highway 26, Fly Creek, NY 13337.
