Jennie C. Snyder Obituary

SCHOHARIE - Jennie Snyder, 96, passed away peacefully to be with our Lord, at home in Schoharie Feb. 26, 2025 with family by her side.

Jennie was born Feb. 7, 1929, in Cobleskill, the daughter of Lambert Nethaway and Charlotte C. (Lawyer) Nethaway.

She graduated from Cobleskill Central School in 1946 and then worked in Newberry's Department Store in Cobleskill.

She married Fred Snyder Nov. 28, 1948 and moved to South Valley, where she became a member of and was active in the South Valley Women's Club and the First Christian Church of South Valley.

As a small business entrepreneur Jennie managed Snyder's General Store in South Valley, where she was a confidant to many and helped pave the way for the acceptance of women in business from the mid-1950s until retiring in 1976. She was quiet but very strong and determined as a pioneer of the working woman balancing a career, family and a home. She enjoyed reading, sewing, baking and she always had a large garden with vegetables and her favorite flowers in bloom. After retirement, she and her husband, Fred spent winters in Edgewater, Florida where they joined the Edgewater Shuffleboard Club. They played well and won numerous tournaments together as a team and individually. In the evenings it was their custom to take walks along the beach. Later on, Jennie enjoyed traveling with her daughters and family to places like North Carolina, Alaska, Hawaii and St. Martin. She had a playful sense of humor and enjoyed playing games, watching classic movies, nature and science documentaries, as well as NASCAR and "BattleBots."

She was predeceased by her parents as well as several half brothers and sisters; her husband, Fred Snyder (June 30 1989); son, Martin Snyder (July 2, 1996); and sister, Marilyn Kriser (June 8, 2016).

She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia Harrington, Cristine Perlin (Dr. Steve Perlin), Rosemary McCarthy; daughter-in-law, Janet Snyder (late Martin Snyder); eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Special appreciation and acknowledgements are extended to those who spent many hours helping with her care giving as her health declined: To her granddaughter, Jocelyn who was an endless source of support in so many ways and her great-grandson, Zaelen Martin Snyder (10 months old), whom she liked to call "George". for the hours of fun and entertainment he gave her as she watched him play with his never-ending smiles.

A special thanks to Jennifer and Diane who treated mom as if she was their own mother and referring to her as their sunshine and beautiful blue eyes. They were a tremendous help and comfort to us all.

To Dana and Tanya who also assisted in her care and to all the people from hospice who were so very helpful in their guidance and counsel.

A time to celebrate her life is planned in the summer, with a time of sharing from 11 a.m. to noon and a memorial service to immediately follow Saturday, June 28, at the First Christian Church of South Valley. Interment will be at the Springfield Center Cemetery later that same day.
