Morris, NY - SOUTH NEW BERLIN - Joseph W. Tyson Jr., a.k.a "Butch" and "Poppi Joe", of South New Berlin, passed away on Monday, April 13, 2026, in Cooperstown, at 81 years of age after a long, fulfilling and loving life.
Joseph was born on Jan. 7, 1945, in Tampa, Florida to Joseph W. Tyson Sr. and Margaret (Schaab) Tyson. He graduated from Uniondale High School in Uniondale in 1963. He went on to become skilled in a multitude of areas that include being an accomplished A-1 welder, backhoe instructor, heavy equipment operator, and a safety consultant. He worked for LILCO/KeySpan on Long Island for over 30 years. His last position with the company was as a training instructor for gas and polyethylene fusions. After retirement, Joseph continued to be a jack of all trades and was the Morris School Tax Collector for over 10 years, the Town of Morris Judge, and the head coach of the Morris High School Varsity Baseball team.
Outside of work, Joseph was a beloved part of his community. He was a friend and neighbor to everyone he met. In Morris, he was an active member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church and devoted his time and energy serving that community. Joseph served as the head of the church council, worked with Pre-Cana candidates, served as a church usher, and volunteered with the youth group.
When he wasn't busy working out in the community, Joseph loved fishing, hunting, woodworking, and tinkering with machinery in his garage. He loved helping a neighbor in need and meeting up with friends whenever he could at the local coffee shop.
Joseph was married on July 17,1965 to his wife of over 60 years, Carol (Sitts) Tyson. Joe and Carol were best friends, soulmates, and two peas in a pod. They loved to go on scenic quad rides around their property together and to go out to dinner for Chinese food.
Joseph is survived by his wife Carol; children, Glenn and Drew; daughter-in-law, Norma; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Gregory, Shane, and McKenna; and grandson-in-law William. He is preceded in death by many friends and family including his parents, Joseph and Margaret; brother Denny; and daughter-in-law Lorraine.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday, April 20 at Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home, 60 S. Broad St, Morris. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 21 at Holy Cross Church, 96 W Main St, in Morris, with burial to follow at Hillington Cemetery.
