DELHI - Karen L. Wakin passed away July 19, 2021, in Delhi.
Karen was born on June 3, 1953, in Walton to the late Richard Hall and Doris (Bartlett) Hall. She was a lifelong Delaware County resident.
Karen worked for many years at the Delaware County Clerk's office then making a career change to work at Delaware Bulldozing until her retirement in 2016.
She married her first husband, David Schmidt, in 1972, who predeceased her in 1981. Karen then married David C. Wakin on July 27, 1996.
Karen is survived by her husband of 25 years, David C. Wakin; four children, Nicole (Matthew) Crandall of Oxford, David (Josie) Schmidt of Walton, Melissa Wakin-Mostert (Stephen) of Delhi and David E. (Dezeree) Wakin of Delhi; along with nine grandchildren; and her sister, Donna (Don) Chapman of Hancock.
Karen had a passion for gardening. Her gardens were magnificent and the envy of many. She loved to attend the garden tours every summer throughout Delaware County. Karen had many hobbies over the years and always took pride in whatever she was working on, they included jewelry making, raising canaries, canning, and knitting. We always looked forward to Karen's creations especially when she was knitting. She would make blankets, scarfs, or hats and always picked the perfect yarns with amazing colors. Karen loved to watch her grandchildren at sporting events and she could always be seen on the sidelines cheering them on (even when her own granddaughter was a cheerleader). She was so proud of all her grandchildren. Karen's true happy place was in North Fort Meyers, Florida, where she could just sink her toes in the sand and soak up the sunshine. She was so excited when Jan. 1 came around so she could spend her winter months in Florida. Karen also enjoyed listening to blues bands, dancing, exploring the newest silver shops and of course her passion for Chico's.... Florida was her home away from home.
Karen spent the last four years battling cancer. She fought valiantly with grace and beauty. Her will to conquer was undeniable. She was so strong for so long. Her family and friends will forever miss her, she is finally freed.
A memorial and prayer service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 27, at MacArthur Funeral Home, 134 Main St., Delhi.
Following the service Karen's family invites you to O'Neill's Shire Pub in celebration of Karen.
Contributions in memory of Karen may be made to Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, P.O. Box 88, Delhi, NY 13753.
