RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Leonard Charles Calkins, "Coach," 79, passed away unexpectedly on Jan. 6, 2022.

In 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force serving with the 328th Combat Support Group and was the recipient of the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He was honorably discharged in 1965.

On May 4, 1963, he married Patricia MacDonald.

For the past 35 years, he was employed by the Richfield Springs Central School District as a bus aide and more notably as the Richfield Springs High School football coach who truly loved his job.

Surviving him are his loving wife of 58 years, Patricia affectionately known as "Mrs. Coach;" three sons, James Calkins of Mohawk, Scott Calkins and his wife, Kimberly of Newport and Shawn Calkins of Sidney Center; eight grandchildren; a special niece, Kathleen Duchesne and her husband, Mark of Scotia; along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Calkins in 1987; brother, Donald Calkins; and sister, Catherine Lamp.

All are invited to a celebration of Leonard's life from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, in the gymnasium at Richfield Springs High School.

Memorial donations may be made to the Leonard C. Calkins Scholarship Fund, c/o RSCS, 93 W. Main St., Richfield Springs, NY 13439.

Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James Street, Richfield Spring.
