Mary E. Williams Obituary

STAMFORD - Mary E. Williams, 73, of Stamford, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2020, at Robinson Terrace Nursing Home.

Born on July 30, 1946, in Margaretville, Mary was the daughter of the late Paul and Catherine Mabey.

Mary was married to John Gary Williams of Hopewell Junction on Oct. 7, 1972, in Stamford.

She was a 1964 graduate of Stamford Central School and attended both Hartwick College and the Kathrine Gibbs Secretarial School in Providence, Rhode Island.

Mary first worked as executive secretary for the Sister in charge of St. Peter's Hospital, Albany.

After she married Gary, she had several secretarial jobs. Their home was in Beekman, until 2008, when she retired with more than 20 years as executive secretary at the corporate office of First Brands (makers of STP & Preston) of Danbury, Connecticut, which later was acquired by Honeywell.

Following retirement, Mary and Gary built their home in Stamford, the beloved town that she grew up in. Mary had found memories of her childhood home and often talked about her dog, Maggi.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Stamford. Mary was a member of the Stamford-Hobart Inner Wheel.

Mary was a gifted quilter, only doing 100 percent hand stitched quilts. She also loved flowers. At her home in both Beekman and Stamford, her yard was filled with daffodils and daylilies. One hybrid daylily was named the Mary E. in her honor by Gary.

She enjoyed playing the trumpet, guitar and piano. Mary also enjoyed listening to four-part a capella harmony and attended many live concerts around the North East. She had a passion for history and was member of the Stamford, Hobart and Gilboa Historical Societies and enjoyed visiting historical sites, homes and museums.

Mary enjoyed traveling and took several cross-country road trips in her retirement. She had been to 47 states. Her favorite vacation place was Qgunquit, Maine, where she visited twice yearly for the past 47 years. Mary enjoyed the sea view.

Besides her husband, Gary, she is survived by her sister, Paula (George) Chase of East Falmouth, Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Janice (Peter) Xeller of Delmar; nephews, Sean (Diane) Chase of Bridgewater, Massachusetts; Daniel Xeller of Charleston, South Carolina; one niece, Catherine Xeller Eksterowicz of Franklin Square; as well as grandnieces and nephews, Ben, Allie and Johann.

Private services and burial were in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford. The Rev. Michael Cambi officiated.
