Norwich, NY - NORWICH - Matthew W. Mitchell, 36, of Norwich, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, Oct. 31, 2025. Born Dec. 18, 1988, he was the beloved son of Kevin and Billie (Smith) Mitchell.

Matthew was the best daddy and husband — devoted, kind, and full of love. His family was his world, and everything he did revolved around them. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his wife and children, whether it was family cookouts, small adventures close to home or simply being together at the end of the day.

He especially loved celebrating the 4th of July, always making sure the night sky was filled with fireworks for his family to enjoy. Matthew shared a special bond with his son Bryan, with whom he loved doing all the "boy things" — shooting cans with BB guns, fishing, mowing the lawn, and finding fun in the everyday moments. He had a big heart and a steady presence, always ready to lend a hand, offer a laugh, or make sure everyone was taken care of.

Matthew's hands were rarely idle; he enjoyed working on projects around the house, being outdoors, and taking pride in a job well done. He will be remembered for his easy smile, his loyalty, and the way he could make any gathering brighter just by being there.

He is survived by his best friend and the love of his life, his soulmate Shannon; his beloved children, Lila, Bryan, Grace, and Brenda Mitchell; brothers, Corey (Megan) Mitchell and Aaron (Dara Looney) Mitchell; and grandfather, William Smith; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will miss him deeply. Matthew was predeceased by his grandmother, Kathleen Smith-O'Bannon; aunts, Brenda Utter and Shirl Keator; and uncle, Ralph Mitchell.

Friends and family are invited to visitation 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home, 60 Broad Street, Morris. His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at the funeral home.
