DELHI - Merle Carleton Loveless was born Sept. 16, 1934, in Lyons, to Adelaide Rich Loveless and Harvey Loveless.
He grew up on a farm in Butler, enjoying all the animals and nature around him.
He graduated from Leavenworth Central School in Wolcott, in 1952. As valedictorian of his class, he won a full scholarship to Syracuse University. In 1956, Merle was accepted to the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University from which he graduated with a doctorate degree in veterinary medicine in 1960.
In 1960, Dr. Loveless married the former Marilyn Ann Judd of Interlaken. They have four sons, Todd, Terry, Scott and Colby and have taken great joy in their children; nine grandchildren, Gavin, Madeleine, Gabrielle, Flynn, Brody, Vanity, Ewen, Aleana and Laken; and one great-grandson, Mason.
Dr. Loveless retired after 36 years of college teaching at the University of Georgia, University of Rhode Island and SUNY Delhi.
He enjoyed hiking, gardening, reading, raising Persian cats and listening to classical music.
There will be no memorial service or calling hours.
Contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Loveless to an animal shelter of one's choice.
