Michael Bernard Mendelson Obituary

DELHI - Michael Bernard Mendelson lived large. Though complicated, he had the biggest heart, the most generous spirit and enviable energy for living.

He was a true fighter, whether protesting against the Vietnam War at the University of Wisconsin, arguing for his clients as an attorney; or, later in life, conjuring his body to do things most people thought it was no longer capable of. His ability to express affection, emotions and love was paramount.

After graduating from NYU School of Law, he became a winning trial lawyer at the Legal Aid Society before entering private practice.

In 1989 he moved to a spot in Delaware County he called paradise where he created amazing gardens.

Athletic and full of grit, he ran multiple marathons placing in the top 10% and played tennis at every chance.

He did not let the diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease at age 50, define him. He continued to run, play tennis and practice family law until his body told him "no more." When he could no longer walk, he biked. When he could no longer stand on his own, he still dug holes in the earth to grow his beautiful lettuces.

His energy and joy was fed in large part by his love for his son, Claude; daughter, Jesse; and her two daughters, Madeleine and Vera. He is mourned as well by his son-in-law, David Defendini; his son's partner, Jaclyn Grodin; his former wife, Jehed Diamond; extended family and friends.

Shiva was suspended because of COVID. A memorial service is being planned.
