Laurens - LAURENS - Patricia "Pat" S. Carey Pelligra passed away on June 8, 2024, at Albany Medical Center at the age of 76.
Pat was born March 28, 1948, at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam.
Anyone that knew Pat as a friend could count on her as a friend for life. So close-knit were her high school friends that they would meet as a group weekly via the Internet to support her through her challenging years.
She graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School in 1966 and from SUNY Oneonta with a teaching degree in English.
She taught for many years at Walton and Norwich high schools until leaving education to be a landlord and manage the many apartments she owned. Although the constant demands of management were very consuming, she relished the workload, as she always made the most of every minute of the day. No moss was ever found underfoot.
After her career in public education, Pat went on to teach high school equivalency coursework to inmates in the New York State prison system at Camp Pharsalia and Camp Brace correctional facilities, as well as with Job Corps Oneonta. She also served as a case manager for the Southern Tier AIDS Association.
She loved Oneonta's parks, be it walking or attending ball games, or winning the 1978 Latke cooking "Golden Spatula" in Neahwa Park.
Being involved in her community was always a priority, whether it being looking after friends or as a public servant. Most recently, she served as president of the Larchwood Lake HOA. She also served as Oneonta City School District Board of Education vice president, on the Arc Otsego County Board of Directors and was on the Board of Governors for the New York State ARC.
The Brain Injury Association of New York State chose Pat and Manny as honorees at the organization's annual March On for Brain Injury Walk last September.
She leaves behind the members of her immediate family, loving husband of 28 years, Manny Pelligra; brother, Mike and his wife, Sarah; daughter, Tracey; son, Ben and his wife, Joann; granddaughters, Meghan and Maeve; stepson, Chris Pelligra and his wife, Melissa; their daughters, Bella and Illy; stepdaughter, Jen Pelligra and her sons, Cian and Wyatt; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, James and Betty Gill.
Calling hours in celebration of Pat's life will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 26, at Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home, 60 S. Broad St., Morris. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Pat's name to the Brain Injury Association of New York State, bianys.org, 5 Pine West Plaza, Suite 506, Albany, NY 12205.
Pat's family has entrusted her care to Edd Stanimer of the Johnston & Stanimer Funeral Home in Morris.
