AFTON - Richard L. Beames, 83, of Afton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023, at his home, surrounded by family.
He was born on May 30, 1939, in Davenport, son of the late Glenn and Clara (Ballard) Beames.
He was married to Sydney Briscoe on Feb. 22, 1959.
Richard started farming with his father and brother Robert at the home farm in Otego. In 1956, along with Glenn and Robert, they started G. Beames & Sons, serving area farms in many capacities. His love of all things farming included growing sweet corn, tractor pulling, and driving. A talented driver, Richard could drive almost anything. He enjoyed go-cart racing and NASCAR, as well as waterskiing, woodworking and puzzles. He was also an avid deer hunter.
He took pride in helping people, and served the Afton community as a volunteer firefighter for more than 50 years. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Richard enjoyed life and made the most of every day.
He will be missed by his wife of 64 years, Sydney Beames; four children, Rachelle Beames, Tom and Corina Beames, Gene and Kate Beames and Trixie and Pat Donahue; six grandchildren, Chad, Bradley, Hannah, Sarah, Nate and McKenzi; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Glenda and Fran Secor; brother, Bert and Vicki Beames; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by infant brother Kenneth; and brother, Robert.
Friends are invited to call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 4. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m.
Burial in Glenwood Cemetery will take place in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be directed to the Afton Fire Department, 15 Spring St., Afton, NY 13730.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
