ONEONTA - Richard "Dick" F. Gorence, 84, of Oneonta, passed away peacefully March 25, 2025 at the Oxford Veterans Home in Oxford.
Born June 17, 1940, Richard was the son of Frank C. and Marie Gorence. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. He continued serving his country in both the National Guard and Army reserves until retiring with a total of 22 years of service.
Following his military service, Richard dedicated more than 30 years of his career to SUNY Oneonta, where he made a lasting impact on the campus community through his hard work and commitment.
Richard was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Gorence, and his cherished daughter, Katrina M. Gorence.
He is survived by his loving children, Richard B. (Paula) Gorence, Brian (Carlene) Gorence and Jeffrey (Mikalina) Gorence. He was a proud grandfather to Thaddeus Gorence, Brianna (Nick) Grenier, Zachary Gorence, Gabrielle (Joel) Guerrette, Max (Beth) Gorence, Caroline Gorence, Katherine Gorence, Relena Gorence, and Anilena Gorence; great-granddaughters, Elle Gorence and Claire Guerrette. He is also survived by his devoted sister, Katherine Downey, and her husband, Bennett, along with many extended family members who will miss him dearly.
Richard's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, country and community. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed going target shooting. He also enjoyed his time at the VFW hall in Oneonta talking with his fellow veterans about their time in service. Richard also enjoyed his time bowling in many different leagues. His warmth, strength, and wisdom will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. April 1 at Milford Center Community Bible Church, 2582 NY- 28, Oneonta. Following the service there will be a celebration at the Oneonta American Legion.
The committal service will be 1 p.m. May 14 for both Richard and Lillian, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 5689 State Highway 7, Oneonta. Richard will be honored with a military service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Richard's honor to the American Legion, 279 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820.
