ROXBURY - Richard More Porter passed away at home on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, surrounded by family following a long battle with cancer.
He was born March 29th, 1951, in Margaretville and was the second child of Jean More and James Porter both of Roxbury.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Porter (Hewitt) of Roxbury; son, Damian Porter (Catherine Schuman) of Roxbury; and daughters, Rebecca O'Donnell (Michael O'Donnell) of Oneonta and Whitney Hamilton (John Thomas Hamilton) of Saratoga Springs. He leaves behind five beautiful grandchildren, Olivia and Claire O'Donnell, Calleigh and McKinley Porter, and Doris Hamilton; and four siblings, Mike Porter (Becky) of Margaretville, David Porter (Elaine) of Gilboa, Robert Porter (Patty) of Binghamton, and Mary Jean Scudder (Edgar) of Roxbury. The list of cousins he leaves behind is too long to print.
Following high school, Richard "Rick" worked many years in construction along the East Coast and eventually spent 30 years working for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. He was a dedicated volunteer member of the Roxbury Fire Department — serving as both firefighter and commissioner — and was a longtime board member and player at Shephard Hills Golf Club.
As a young man Rick enjoyed skiing, golfing and fishing. As he got older, he enjoyed visiting with friends and family and spending as much time as possible outside - either tending to his lawn, sitting on his front porch doing crossword puzzles or small projects around the house. He was always the funniest man in the room and could make small talk with anyone. He was a very proud husband, father and "Papa." He will be missed greatly by family and community members alike.
A memorial service at Jay Gould Memorial Church in Roxbury, at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19, will be followed by a reception at Roxbury Fire Department.
In advance, the family thanks the members of both communities for their support during this time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Jay Gould Memorial Church Restoration Fund (53837 NY-30, Roxbury, NY 12474), or the Roxbury Fire Department (P.O. Box 514, Roxbury, NY 12474.)
