ONEONTA - Robert K. Nonenmacher, 95, of Oneonta, formerly of Edmeston, passed away Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, in Oxford.

Robert was born on Dec. 10, 1926, in Niagara Falls, the son of the late Earle L. and Katherine L Knapp Nonenmacher. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Bobbi Nonenmacher Stensland; and sisters, Janet Johnson and Phyllis Stedem.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice Larson Nonenmacher of Oneonta, who he married on Nov. 24, 1949, in Kenmore. Also surviving are a son, Randy (Karen) Nonenmacher of Marcellus, and daughters, Dani (Leon) Stockwell of Virginia, Kim (John) Flynn of Wurtsboro and Tomi (Jon Stern) Nonenmacher; a son-in-law Mike, Stensland; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Robert was raised in Kenmore, where he was active in the Boy Scouts. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy toward the end of World War II. He then went on to graduate from SUNY Buffalo where he majored in art education.

In 1952 be became an art teacher in northern Otsego County with the then developing Board of Cooperative Educational Services. He traveled to 10 small rural schools to bring art education to them. In that capacity, he taught kindergarten through 12th grade.

In 1962, he joined the staff of Edmeston Central School as the art teacher, where he remained until his retirement in 1985.

Robert served for many years as town historian and museum director, and was also a past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Edmeston Rotary Club. He also took great pride in more than 70 years of membership in the Methodist Church.

A gathering of friends and family will take place from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 26, at Pathfinder Village in Edmeston.
