DAVENPORT - Roy E. Smith passed away peacefully Nov. 3, 2021, in hospice care's inpatient unit in Tempe, Arizona, at the age of 90.

Roy was born April 19, 1931, to the late Edward D. and Alice (Odell) Smith.

Roy graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School, class of 1948.

After graduating he joined the Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, California, as a supple clerk until his honorable discharge in 1956.

After his discharge from the Marine Corps, Roy moved back to NY where he was employed by Burrs Dodge as service and parts manager. Roy later worked at Charlotte Valley Central School as superintendent of buildings and grounds until his retirement in 1987.

After retirement Roy worked at the Ben Franklin store and later Syman Art Services.

Roy married Betty May Gildersleeve on July 27, 1958, at the Methodist Church in Davenport. Roy and Betty May had three children, Roy Dean, Becky Hope and Eleanor Mima. Roy also had a daughter, Kathryn Louise, from a previous marriage. Roy and Betty also fostered many children.

Roy served as dog warden for the town of Davenport as well as town justice where he performed 101 marriages over his long career. He was a volunteer fire policeman with the Davenport Fire Department.

Roy was a lay pastor at Davenport Methodist Church until he became a member and elder of the Davenport Presbyterian Church.

Roy loved working with wood. He and Betty May made lawn ornaments. He also enjoyed dong word searches, reading and watching Westerns and he loved his scratch-off tickets.

After moving to Arizona, he enjoyed helping his granddaughter with her school work. He declared himself principal of her homeschool.

Roy is survived by his children, Roy (Kristi) Smith of Tennessee, Becky Smith (Tim) of New York, Elly Lang (Harley) of Arizona; four grandchildren, Jeremy Smith (Christina), Joshua Smith (Lacey), Dakotah Smith (Rachael) of North Carolina, and Trinity Lang of Arizona. Roy also had two great-grandchildren, Lorelei Smith and Roy Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Alan (Joan) Smith; sister-in-law, Nancy Demarest; along with several nieces and nephews.

Roy's sister, June Wood, sadly passed away three weeks after Roy.

Roy was predeceased by his wife, Betty May; brother, Milton and sister-in-law, Pat Smith; sister, Georgiana and brother-in-law, Carl Utter; daughter, Kathryn L. Brown; and grandson, Jerry Alexander Brown.

Services for Roy will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 4, at the Davenport Firehouse, followed by full military honors in Davenport Cemetery, where we will put Mom and Dad to rest. A reception will follow at the firehouse.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roy E. Smith Scholarship Fund at Charlotte Valley Central School.
