Stephen Joseph  DeGroat
PELHAM MANOR - Stephen Joseph DeGroat, former resident of Pelham Manor, passed away peacefully at Wilson Hospital, Johnson City, on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, following a long illness.
Stephen was born in Cooperstown, on July 1, 1949, to Catherine A. (Flannery) and Arthur W. DeGroat.
He attended Stamford Central School and graduated from Fordham University in 1971, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics.
He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and granduncle.
He leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Iris; son, James of Queens; and daughter, Kathryn DeGroat M.D., of Albany; sisters, Patricia (Francis) Brissette of Boylston, Massachusetts and Catherine DeGroat (Mark Levin) of Milford, Connecticut; brothers, Robert (Angela) of Fayetteville, Michael (Jean) of Walton and John (Shariffah) of Singapore.
He also leaves behind extended family in New York, Florida and Puerto Rico.
Stephen worked early on at East River Savings Bank as a branch manager.
Later he went to work as an investigator for the New York State Office of the Special Prosecutor. His work there was investigating nursing home fraud. He was instrumental in the prosecution of nursing home administrators in the mid-1970's.
Stephen became an investment banker and worked at Drexel Burnham Lambert, Smith Barney and Guilford Securities.
He was president and chief executive officer of Broadmark Capital.
Following 9/11 he took over the securities firm Jesup and Lamont until 2006.
During his career he was responsible for the public offerings of Patterson Energy and Green Mountain Coffee. His profession required that he travel frequently in the U.S. and to China, Brazil and Nicaragua.
Stephen loved the outdoors. He was an avid golfer and fly fisherman. He enjoyed many fishing excursions to Roscoe. He was a supporter of Stamford's junior golf program and was past president of Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle.
Stephen will be dearly missed by family and friends and will be always in our hearts.
Calling hours, to which relatives and friends are invited to attend, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Sacred Heart Church, Stamford, with the Rev. Edward J. Golding officiating. Please assemble at church. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Stamford.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Courtney Funeral Home, Walton.
