JEFFERSON - Stephen L. Schmitt, 63, of Harpersfield, passed away Sunday, Sept. 18, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Steve was born on Dec. 8, 1958, to the late Betty (Hillis) and Donald Gordon Schmitt in Stamford. Steve graduated from Jefferson Central School in 1977 and then attended SUNY Cobleskill.

Steve devoted 35 years to the Town of Harpersfield Highway Department.

Steve is survived by the love of his life and wife of 38 years, Carol (Pindar) Schmitt; his children, Cody (Sarah) Schmitt and Stephen J. Schmitt (Sarah Rathjen); grandchildren Lillian and Owen; siblings, Roxanne (Charles) Jochem, Gary (Lisa) Schmitt and Larry Schmitt; and so many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, "adopted family" and friends.

Steve didn't need much to be happy. You could find him on a road trip with his boys, sitting by the evaporator, laughing with a beer, playing cards, driving a tractor, watching a game, or with grandchildren snuggled up on his lap around a campfire. Steve brought joy, laughter and love to each person he knew.

The family will receive visitors who wish to pay their respects from 3 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, at MacArthur Funeral Home, 15 Buntline Drive, Stamford. Friends and family are also welcome to join in a celebration of Steve's life at Bud's Place in Worcester, at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 1.
