Fly Creek, NY - FLY CREEK - Timothy "Tim" Weir, beloved son, brother, husband, father, and Grampa, passed away on April 11, 2026, following a stroke. He was 77 years old.

Born on Dec. 7, 1948, in Cooperstown, Tim grew up in the nearby hamlet of Fly Creek, and to hear him tell it, he was either related to or went to high school with just about everyone in town. He graduated from Cooperstown High School before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1968, completing boot camp at Camp Pendleton, California, and serving at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

After his discharge, Tim pursued his education and worked in construction, and it was during this chapter that he met and married his first wife, Marilyn "Lyn" Sammis. As their family grew, Tim answered a second call to serve - this time joining the United States Navy, where he finished a distinguished 29 year career (he didn't want to be a "lifer"). He served first as a Radioman before transitioning to Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) and retired in 2002 with the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.

While stationed in Winter Harbor, Maine, Tim met the woman who would become his partner for the next 39 years: his wife, Layne Gray. Together, they embraced a life of adventure, spending several years traveling the country in their RV before settling into a rhythm between their beloved Fly Creek and Yuma, Arizona.

Tim loved his family and friends fiercely, though you might not always have known it. He showed it by showing up, looking out for the people in his life without fanfare or expectation. To Nicholas and Kate, he was a devoted father who led by example, taking them fishing, camping, and hiking and turning the outdoors into a classroom without ever making it feel like one. He loved putzing in his garage, was an avid hunter and golfer, and he could hold a room for hours with tales of military adventures, Fly Creek's colorful characters and his own youthful antics.

Tim is survived by his wives, Layne and Lyn; son, Nicholas, and daughter, Kate; mother, Jo-Ann; sister, Jennifer; brother, Randy; grandchildren; and a beloved extended family of countless cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elial Weir, Jr., and his brother, Robbie.

Visiting hours will be held beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday, May 16 at Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer Street, Cooperstown, followed by a time for sharing memories. Burial with full military honors accorded will be held at 1 p.m. in the Fly Creek Valley Cemetery followed by a reception at the Cooperstown Veteran's Club, 60 Main Street, Cooperstown.
